Mike Tarman of New Richmond is $10,000 richer after winning the Somerset Youth Athletic Association Ice Fishing Contest on Saturday.
Tarman caught the largest fish in the nine-year history of the tournament, winning the event with a northern pike that tipped the scales at 3.075 pounds.
The top three fish in the contest, all northern pike, were caught within 20 minutes of each other on Bass Lake on Saturday.
“All were caught in shallow water using a tip-up and shiner,” said tournament spokesman Dave Praschak.
Thirty-one fish were caught in the adult division, but all 50 prizes were issued. Two fish were caught in the youth division, with a perch caught by Jackson Hoffbeck bringing home the top prize.
This was the first year that the tournament was moved to January from late February. Tournament leaders gave the impression that the tournament will stay in January.
Many of the fishermen stayed on the ice well after the tournament to hear the drawings for the unclaimed spots among the 50 prize winners.
“We also gave away an additional 12 great prizes for the Bass Lake Raffle. Also a $1,300 cash raffle prize was awarded,” Praschak said. “SYAA is very appreciative of the support of the Bass Lake Association and we continue to support their efforts to restore fish habitat within the lake.”
A complete list of the winners can be found on the contest website (www.basslakecontest.com).
