As the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade approaches, the New Richmond City Council is leveling the playing field for local bars and restaurants.
At a special meeting Monday, the council approved three additional bars in the downtown district that will be able to allow patrons to possess and consume alcohol in front of their establishments on March 17.
The city previously voted to allow Bobcat’s Bar & Grill and Sam’s Corner Bar & Grill to expand its alcohol sales premise to the sidewalk in front of their businesses. On Monday, Champ’s Bar & Grill, Brady’s Brewhouse and Wild Badger Bar were also given permission to do the same.
The Shamrock Club on Third Street also has permission to expand its premise to areas around the bar.
Council member Jane Hansen, who offered the lone “no” vote on the matter, asked if the city is able to allow alcohol consumption along a state highway. She also asked if the city opens itself up to any liability issues by allowing drinking on public sidewalks.
Council member Jim Zajkowski said he thought the individual businesses would be responsible for issues occurring in front of their properties.
Mayor Fred Horne said the city would research the matter prior to St. Patrick’s Day.
