Running the Hammond and Roberts Senior Nutrition sites is a lot like running a restaurant, according to Jordan Pechuman, new site manager for the Hammond/Roberts senior centers.
“There’s a lot less stress and pressure at this job,” Pechuman said. “You know exactly how many you’re going to feed at what time every day, and what you’re going to have.”
Pechuman was the owner of Coachman Supper Club in Baldwin for 13 years, before selling the restaurant and retiring seven years ago.
In those seven years, Pechuman said he has held some part-time jobs.
“I hadn’t been working much this winter, just taking it easy and I got kind of bored,” Pechuman said. “So this came up at a great time.”
Pechuman had been working part-time as a cook for the senior centers, filling in as needed. Then Randi Hanson, Aging and Disability Recource Center (ADRC) nutrition program coordinator, asked Pechuman to fill in as interim senior nutrition site manager when the position became open last month.
Pechuman said his position as site manager became permanent as of Feb. 11.
Hanson said senior nutrition program participants from Hammond and Roberts have been giving her a lot of positive feedback since Pechuman began.
“He does a fantastic job,” Hanson said.
Pechuman, a lifelong Hammond/Roberts area resident, now lives in Roberts with his wife Kim, near the Hammond/Roberts border.
He said the best part of being senior nutrition manager is getting to see the seniors who come for lunch.
“I know most of the people that are coming to have lunch every day, either growing up with knowing them when I was a kid or … I’ve got teachers coming from when I was in school,” Pechuman said.
Pechuman said it has not been too much of a role-reversal serving lunch to his former teachers.
“I don’t tell ‘em what to do,” Pechuman said. “I just make sure they eat right.”
