The Somerset boys basketball team fell short of reaching the WIAA state tournament.
The Spartans were defeated by Barron 63-57 in the WIAA Division 3 sectional semifinal game played at New Richmond High School on Thursday night.
Barron (24-1) will face La Crosse Aquinas (21-4) in the sectional championship game which will be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday at River Falls High School.
Somerset and Barron battled through a close game until the final moments of the game. Barron’s Josh Balts hit a free throw with 2:30 left in the game to tie the score at 54-54. It was the start of a 10-0 run for the Bears. Somerset didn’t score again until Tyler Ledbeter sank a three-pointer with 17 seconds remaining for the final points of the game.
Somerset was led by junior Gaelin Elmore. He scored 22 points, but 20 of his points came in the first half. Ledbeter finished with 15 points and Reggie Larson scored 10 points.
