UPDATE (Aug. 2, 2010): Hudson drowning victim identified
Less than an hour after they were summoned to the scene of a presumed drowning Monday evening near the swimming beach downtown Hudson, divers found the man and attempted to resuscitate him but he was later pronounced dead.
One hour after a man disappeared beneath the surface of the St. Croix River Monday evening, he was pulled from the water and rushed to an ambulance where rescuers attempted to resuscitate him. He was later transported to the Hudson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The man was identified as Ablardo Torres-Cruz, 38, from Richfield, Minn. There was a delay in releasing the name of the man because of the time it took in notifying relatives in Central America.
Dive teams from St. Croix and Pierce counties were summoned to the drowning Monday evening near the swimming beach off First Street, downtown Hudson.
Authorities were alerted at 8:41 p.m. that a male had jumped from a boat about 20 feet off the west end of the Dike Road but didn't resurface.
Before emergency personnel arrived, two bystanders jumped into the water and swam to the area where the man was last seen but they were unable to locate him.
Law enforcement and EMS personnel arrived at the scene across from the Pier 500 restaurant, within just a few minutes of receiving the call. A witness was able to give an accurate location where the victim was last seen and a search was begun.
The St. Croix EMS dive team requested help from Pierce about 25 minutes after the initial call was received. Officers in boats from the Washington County Sheriff's Department water patrol and Wisconsin DNR also assisted.
A member of the St. Croix dive team located the man's body in 10-12 feet of water.
