MADISON - Out of a group of five only one wrestler carries the hopes St. Croix Central has for a state championship at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament.
Central's Marcus Malecek was the only Panther wrestler to win a match so far Friday, topping Adams-Friendship's Tyler Burrows 3-0 at 220 pounds in Division 2. He will face Luxemburg-Casco's Luke Dietsche (So., 40-11) in the semifinals this evening at the Kohl Center.
The rest of SCC's contingent lost twice Friday.
Adam Lewis was pinned by Wild Rose/Wautoma's Zach Sirny in a quick 1:24 at 106 in the quarterfinals. Lewis then lost 5-0 in the consolation round to St. Croix Falls's Drew Wheeler.
Cody Nyhagen lost 6-1 to Wrightstown's Jackson Fox in the quarterfinals which was followed by a close 4-3 defeat to Thurston Schuster of Marshall at 160.
Lauden Wood's almost pulled off another comeback wins as tried and tried to get a single-leg takedown on Big Foot/Williams Bay heavyweight Garrett Cary in the quarterfinals. But Cary scouted Wood well and blocked each attempt for a 3-2 decision in his favor. Wood lost 5-1 to Richland Center's Logan Schmidt in the consolation round.
