MADISON - Somerset wrestler Gabe Flandrick had a successful opening day at the WIAA state tournament at the Kohl Center.
The Spartan senior defeated Wisconsin Lutheran's Dan Squires 7-4 at 160 pounds Thursday's evening to move on to the quarterfinals in Division 2.
Flandrick (41-2) will face senior Cole Hansen (42-5) of Marshall. The quarterfinals begin Friday at 11:15 a.m. The winner of the match wrestles tonight in the semifinals, the loser in the consolation round later in the afternoon.
The Spartans' Bobby LeRoy will also be wrestling this morning. As a sectional champion, he byed into the quarterfinals and thus will take on Tristan Zurfluh of Sparta at 138 in Division 2. Zurfluh was 5-3 winner over Wrightstown's Jake Schmidt in the prelims.
Somerset's Max Praschak was pinned in his prelim match by Luxemburg-Casco's Jordan Pardowsky in 4:38 at 170 pounds. The Spartan sophomore concludes his season with a 22-13 record.
