Recession not stopping cheese production

Wisconsin’s cheese production continues to grow in spite of the recession.

According to the National Ag Statistics Service, the Badger State made 4.9 percent more cheese in October than it did a year ago.

The total was just under 220 million pounds.

Wisconsin’s increase was almost 2.5 times the national jump of 2 percent. We’re still the nation’s top cheese-maker, and second-place California has been falling behind for most of the year.

The Golden State made 176 million pounds in October, down almost 7 percent from the year before.

Idaho, New York and Minnesota rank third through fifth.

Wisconsin’s output of American-type cheeses was almost 12 percent above last October. Italian cheese production rose 1.3 percent.
