Bucks get more bad pitching news; Suppan injures oblique muscle

Brewers’ starter Jeff Suppan strained his left oblique muscle in Monday’s loss to the Nationals. The injury was announced Tuesday.

Suppan said he felt a twinge during his first at-bat. He didn’t believe it affected his throwing motion.

But Suppan gave up 10 runs in five and one-third innings in that game.

He’ll be re-evaluated Thursday, but at least his next start on Saturday appears to be in jeopardy.

The injury is similar to the ones that kept pitchers Braden Looper and Trevor Hoffman out for several weeks at spring training.

Meanwhile, time is running out for the Brewers to seek outside pitching help.

The non-waiver trading deadline is Friday.

And general manager Doug Melvin says he’s still in a buying mode although the choices for a solid starter appear to remain thin.

There’s still talk that the Brewers are going after Seattle left-hander Jarrod Washburn of Webster and perhaps Baltimore reliever George Sherrill.

Melvin says the asking prices have been high, but that can still change.
