Nick Bovis, 89

Jan. 28, 2010

Nick Bovis, loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dear friend to many, died Jan. 28, 2010, at Deerfield Gables in New Richmond, Wis., at the age of 89.

Nick was born Oct. 20, 1920, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Tom and Minnie (Palmer) Bovis, the brother of Katherine (Katres) and Sylvia (Xykes). He attended Central High School until enlisting in the United States Army Air Corp and served during World War II as a gunner on B-25s. His tours of duty included North Africa, Sicily, India and Burma.

After being honorably discharged, Nick returned to Sioux City where he married the love of his life, Mary Swanson, on Feb. 2, 1946. With the exception of a few years in Washington State and Aberdeen, S.D., Nick and Mary lived in the Sioux City area.

Nick enjoyed golfing and bowling, and was the owner/manager of Bowl-Mor Lanes located at Ninth and Nebraska Streets in Sioux City. After retiring, they moved to New Richmond, Wis., in 1996 to be closer to their son and family.

Nick was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 59 years, his parents, and two sisters.

He is survived by his son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Louise; his granddaughters, Kara Bovis, Tomya (Bovis) and husband John Erdmier, Nikki Bovis; and great-grandchildren, Seth, Justeen, and Jessica; his brother-in-law, Harold Swanson; and nieces and nephews.

The immediate family will hold a private memorial service in Sioux City to honor their beloved one who is apart from them but with his Lord God. Condolences may be sent in care of Tom Bovis, 2245 15th St., Monroe, WI 53566.

Arrangements by Cullen Crea Funeral Home, 715-246-2667.
