Kareen Lillian Nelson Millis was born in New Richmond, Wis., to Conrad and Hattie Lindberg Nelson.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Evelyn Walton, of Osceola, Wis., and her twin brother, Kerwyn "Bud" Nelson of National City and El Cajon, Calif.
The siblings lost their father to a sudden death in 1931. Their mother died in 1947. After graduating from New Richmond High School in 1935 and nurse's training in 1941, Kareen enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1943, serving in the 54th General Hospital in New Guinea. Kareen married U.S. veteran Orson E. Millis, originally of Edgerton, Minn., on June 22, 1947. They celebrated 54 years of marriage until his death in Jan. 2003.
Kareen died peacefully in her home in Sioux Falls, S.D., surrounded by her children, on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at the age of 92 years.
Funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 4, at Colonial Funeral Home in Edgerton with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment following the funeral in Hillside Cemetery in Edgerton. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.
She is survived by her four children, Cynthia (Doyle Horton) Millis of Houston, Texas, Grant Millis of Sioux Falls, Leah (Robert) Moncur of Sioux Falls, and Deborah Millis of Fort Collins, Colo.; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; several surviving cousins; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and other relatives.
