George Dennis, 89George Dennis had been at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Prairie Farm for a short time before his death on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the age of 89 years.
George Dennis was born on June 26, 1922, to Peter and Elena Dennis, in Vance Creek Township of Barron County, Wis. He attended Jones Creek School. He took a job in Minneapolis before enlisting in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He served as an electrician’s mate on the USS Harveson. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Barron County and went to work for the Turtle Lake Creamery. On Oct. 31, 1953, he was united in marriage to Sophie Fall at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in rural Clayton, Wis. He eventually took over the operation of the family dairy farm. He and Sophie raised five daughters.
George was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as gardening. Over the years he attended many reunions with his shipmates from the war. He was also a lifetime member of the Clear Lake VFW. Even though it was hard work, George loved farming. He retired from full-time farming in 1985 but continued living on the farm.
He had been at the Pioneer Nursing Home in Prairie Farm for a short time before his death on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the age of 89 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John, Frank, and Peter Jr.; sisters, Marie Peroff and Helen Dennis.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sophie; daughters, Cynthia Dennis, Darla Dennis, Patrice Dennis, Mary (David) Timm, and Deanna Dennis. He also leaves two grandchildren as well as other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, from Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in rural Clayton. Burial was at the Holy Trinity Cemetery with military honors. There was a visitation at the church from 4-7 p.m. Friday followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. There was also a visiting time for the hour prior to the service on Saturday.
