Elaine Kocian, 83, of Barron, died Saturday, April 7, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Rochester, Minn.

Elaine Kocian, 83, of Barron, died Saturday, April 7, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Rochester, Minn.

She was born Oct. 23, 1928, in New Richmond, Wis., to George and Grace (McNamara) Brown and raised in New Richmond, graduating from New Richmond High School in 1946. Elaine graduated from UW-River Falls in 1950 with a degree in high school English education. In addition to teaching, she also coached track and basketball. She taught in Somerset, Stillwater, Rice Lake, and New Richmond. Elaine was married in New Richmond on July 8, 1957, to Robert Kocian, and they lived and raised a family in New Richmond. She also worked with her husband, Bob, at the Kocian's Supermarket for many years. While in New Richmond, Elaine was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church where she taught religious education for many years. Elaine moved to Almena in 1992 and was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and gardening. She was also a volunteer at the Almena school. Elaine especially enjoyed cheering her grandchildren on at school and sporting events.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, on Oct. 22, 1987. She was also preceded in death by one son, Steve, and infant twin daughters, Jean and Jane.

She is survived by two daughters, Jane (Michael) Klatt of Barron and Colleen (Scott) Johnson of Cumberland; nine grandchildren, Sean (Cassie), Rachel, Bridget, Molly, Emily, Mitchell, Kayla, Kevin, and JulieAnne; one sister, Bernice Brown of Cumberland; one brother, Edmund (Eleanor) Brown of New Richmond; her "daughter" from the Children of Northern Ireland Program, Mary Kiely Smith of Huddersfield, England; and nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Richmond with Father Dave Oberts officiating. Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. Saturday morning at the church. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, New Richmond. Pallbearers are Scott Johnson, Michael Klatt, Pat Brown and Mike Kocian.

Skinner Funeral Home of Cumberland is serving the family.
