Joan A. McCoy, 99, of Sparta, Wis., passed away Friday, Aug. 3, at Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta, surrounded by family.

Joan A. McCoy, 99, of Sparta, Wis., passed away Friday, Aug. 3, at Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta, surrounded by family.

Joan was born on Nov. 24, 1912, in Beach, N.D., to Loren and Anna (Knowlton) Austin. The family moved to Sparta in October 1920. After graduating from Sparta High School in 1930, she attended La Crosse State College.

Joan married Douglas Donald McCoy on Nov. 3, 1934, in Sparta. During World War II, Douglas served with the 32nd Division, Wisconsin National Guard, both in the United States and in the South Pacific. Following World War II, they returned to Sparta where they raised their family.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Douglas; her brother, Randolph Austin; and her great-granddaughter Ashley M. McCoy.

Joan is survived by her four children, Anne (Chuck) Mehls of New Richmond, Wis., Joan (John) Clay of Ostrander, Minn., Colonel Douglas (Carolyn Lunsford) McCoy Jr., USAF Retired, Woodbridge, Va., and John McCoy of Minneapolis, Minn.; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Joan was a lifelong active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sparta. She was a member of PEO since 1937, a member of the American Contract Bridge League, AARP, and a member of the board of directors of the Morrow Memorial Home. She volunteered as a ballot clerk and as a reader at the Morrow Home and delivered Meals on Wheels.

An avid golfer and bridge player, Joan also enjoyed knitting, completing New York Times crossword puzzles, swimming, hiking, dancing, and relished reading.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Sparta, with Vicar Sandra Castillo officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta. Family and friends are invited to call at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, with a 7:45 p.m. prayer service.
