Marlene Parent of Osceola, Wis., died Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Osceola Medical Center, at the age of 78.

Marlene was born Mary Ann Marlene Murtha on Sept. 4, 1934, to William and Ida Murtha in Erin Prairie, St. Croix County. She was the fourth of four children and spent her early years on farm in Erin Prairie and later moved to New Richmond. She graduated from St. Mary's grade school and New Richmond High School. She attended modeling and business school in Minneapolis and over the years took business classes.

On May 10, 1955, she married Harris Parent at Immaculate Conception Church in New Richmond. They were married 57 years. Her greatest blessing and joy was their two sons, Steven and Rick. Marlene spent most of her working years as a secretary/bookkeeper in many capacities and as a partner in their former business, Parent Osceola Cleaners. Sewing was a passion which led her to making and designing bridal gowns and formal wear. She also was active in her church for many years and made and designed complete sets of vestments, banners, and altar cloths. She also loved knitting, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, and was an avid history reader.

She served in many capacities and committees at her church. She previously served as a Girl Scout leader, was a former member of the Osceola Business Women's Club, Legion Auxiliary, Homemakers Club, Polk County Cancer Society, Hospital Auxiliary, and was Community Fund volunteer and an American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery volunteer for breast cancer.

Marlene was a great hugger. She gave hugs whether you wanted them or not. Her motto was a "Hug isn't a hug unless you give it away." Her family, especially nieces and nephews and her many friends, will miss her hugs and her never failing to say "I love you" because she really did.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; brother Warren; and sister, Valerie.

She is survived by husband, Harris; sons Steven (Phops) of Singapore, Rick "Keeker" (Molly) of Osceola; grandchildren, Stephanie, Alex, Sam; and brother Donald (Darlene) Murtha of Minneapolis.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, Sept. 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Osceola. Private interment Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorials suggested to the American Cancer Society.
