Andrew Paul Slater Jr., age 81, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Jan. 20.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, teacher, coach, and friend who will be greatly missed by many including Barbara Hayward Slater, his wife of 56 years; his daughters, Betsy Spencer (Mark), Becky Craig (Steve), and Mary Slater-Kenny; his grandchildren, Maria Vukovich (Mirko), Joe Spencer (Kristin), Beka Spencer, John Spencer, Ben Spencer, and Hazel-Grey Kenny; his brother, Ed Slater (Marilyn); as well as many other relatives and friends.
Andy was born in Uniontown, Pa., to parents Andrew and Anna Slater. He graduated from Uniontown High School, Davis and Elkins College, and the University of Minnesota. Andy also served in the United States Marine Corps and the Wisconsin National Guard. He taught in Black River Falls, Wis., before moving to New Richmond in 1967 where he taught physical education and science for the middle and high schools until 1991. He also coached throughout his teaching career.
During the last years of his life, as his body gave him greater and greater challenges, Andy could truly say: "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; the God of my strength, in whom I will trust." 2 Samuel 22:2-3.
The family extends an invitation to all who wish to join them as they celebrate Andy's life. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Boutwells Landing Chapel located at 5600 Norwich Parkway, Oak Park Heights, MN 55082. Memorials may be sent to Let's Go Fishing, Stillwater Chapter, letsgofishingstillwater.com.
