Alice Casey, 85

Died Jan. 28, 2013

Alice Mary Casey was born in Glenwood City, Wis., on Feb. 6, 1927, to Phillip and Frances (Aebly) Meulemans. She graduated from Glenwood City High School in 1945 as valedictorian and obtained a teaching degree from River Falls Normal School. She taught at various rural schools in the area until 1954. She married the love of her life, Miles Casey, on May 25, 1948. They spent many happy years together raising their children and operating a dairy farm in the town of Cylon.

Alice took great pride in her flower and vegetable gardens. She was an excellent cook and baker who welcomed and served delicious meals to anyone who came to her home. She always found time to attend her children’s school activities and help with numerous 4-H projects. She was a long-time member of Cylon Homemakers. In 1987, Miles and Alice sold their farm to their son Rick and moved to New Richmond. During this time Alice learned to play Bridge and found time for reading and traveling. She served on committees to do research and write books on rural schools and creameries in St. Croix County. She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross blood drives. Her favorite pastime was visiting with her children and grandchildren.

Alice was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Erin Prairie. She received the Pax Christi award in 1993. Her faith and prayers carried her family through many tragedies in her life including the death of an infant daughter and the 25-year illness of her daughter Michelle who needed extensive medical treatment and numerous hospitalizations. Alice will be remembered by everyone who knew her as a gracious and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

She is survived by her children Pat (Mark) Backes of Ridgecrest, Calif.; Joanne (Jack) Gust, Menomonie: Jackie (Jim) Wendorf, Tomahawk; Mark Casey and Rick (Pat) Casey of New Richmond; Colleen (Evan) Hansen, Stevens Point; and Bob (Dena) Casey, Roberts. She leaves 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a sister, Lois Meulemans; her husband, Miles, in 2008; two daughters, Michelle and Kelly; and grandson Dan Casey.

Visitation will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Erin Prairie Township from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the church, with a 1-hour visitation prior to service. Burial at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.
