• Kids listen intently to firefighter Scott Gavin after they tour the fire-safety house at school. Gavin instructed kids that they should exit the house, get to their safe-meeting place and never, under any circumstances, go back into a house or other structure that is burning or smoking.

Debbie Griffin photos
• Memphis LaBore sprints away from the fire-safety house at Westside Elementary after completing the drill of escaping from a second-story window and climbing down a ladder with help from firefighters Bill Lubich (left) and Bill Cernohous.
 • Each year the Fire Department comes to each elementary school and conducts a fire-safety program for the kids. While it involves a different kind of education for each grade, kids in 2nd and 3rd grade take a tour through the fire-safety house, which emits fake smoke and where they learn safe-kitchen tips.
