  • Two local men visit Nicaragua at least once a year, including the partner city to River Falls and Hudson, Ocotal. On their next trip in January, they hope to deliver donated baseball equipment.
  • Baseball is popular in Nicaragua, where players can 'go professional' and make a living. A program in Ocotal gives young men a chance to play on a team and the incentive to stay in school to participate.
  • Local agriculture experts help Nicaragua not only through the Farmer-to-Farmer program but also with Partners in Wisconsin, which has brought the city benefits like a community kitchen and computers for a shelter and various materials for a school and church in Ocotal.
  • One of the items Nolte and Jilek would like to provide for partners in Ocotal is a second oven for the successful community center there, where many people learn skills such as cooking and sewing.
  • Nolte and Jilek's work in Nicaragua has included introducing other ways of cooking besides big wood fires -- such as these small "rocket stoves" and slow-cooking solar ovens.
