Every morning St. Croix Central Elementary students get off the buses and gather around the flagpole, standing in a field near the third and fourth grade cabins and recite the Pledge of Allegiance together.
The elementary students are now attending “Panther Camp” located at Rolling Ridges Girl Scout Camp, which the school district is leasing from Girl Scouts River Valleys.
The smell permeating the entire St. Croix Central Elementary building is a reminder of the smoke damage that has rendered many of the school’s classroom items unusable. However, thanks to an outpouring of community and area support, SCC Elementary does not need school supplies any longer.
St. Croix Central Elementary students will be spending the rest of the year at “Panther Camp.” The school district has leased Rolling Ridges Girl Scout Camp (Hudson) and students began attending classes at the camp Monday, May 6, a little less than a week after the fire that closed St. Croix Central Elementary.
Police announced a suspect has been arrested, following the investigation of the St. Croix Central Elementary School fire. The announcement was made at a community meeting to update parents and community members on efforts to resume classes.
In the wake of the fire that has closed the St. Croix Central Elementary School building, the community is coming together to support the school. Several area schools, including Somerset and New Richmond schools, are collecting donations of school supplies for St. Croix Central Elementary students and staff.
After a Tuesday, April 30, fire closed St. Croix Central Elementary, district officials have been searching for a place to hold classes for the remainder of the school year. District Superintendent David Bradley said the district has identified Rolling Ridges Girl Scout Camp, approximately 6 miles northwest of Roberts.
Fifth-graders are usually not excited about writing poetry, said Katie Tate, St. Croix Central Middle School fifth grade teacher. But this year, Tate’s class was very excited about their poetry project.
On April 12, the SCC eighth grade choir had a new performance experience. The group performed “The Star Spangled Banner” at the start of a Harlem Globetrotters game in the Target Center in Minneapolis.
Christine Pommerening used a knitting loom her grandmother had given her as a Christmas present to create a hat for her mother’s friend, who was ill with cancer. Pommerening is now using her loom as a part of her Silver Award project.
The increasing prevalence of technology in society and in school curriculum standards led two St. Croix Central middle school teachers to give their students special book report assignments for third term.
