Community Garden offers plots for rent in New Richmond

Do you have a desire for fresh vegetables, but just don't have the ground available to plant a garden? Are you thinking maybe with this year's food prices, it might make sense to plant a garden? Are you a loco-vore who wants to eat fresh vegetables grown locally.

St. Croix Valley Master Gardeners has an answer for you. The St. Croix Valley Community Garden, located just north of New Richmond on Highway 65, is a Master Gardener-sponsored community garden which offers 20-by-20 foot plots available for rental to anyone and everyone. The plots are on good soil with a good history of growing vegetables and flowers, and right along the highway.

Located on the Garden Expressions property 1.5 miles north of New Richmond, the site has water available for plot renters and parking on site. A 20-by-20 plot rental is $30 for the season.

Contact Carolyn Barrette at 715-549-6438 to arrange a spot, or stop in at Garden Expressions and talk to Jonna or Dick Klukas. Renters in the New Richmond area as well as other parts of St. Croix and Polk counties have taken advantage of the opportunity to grow produce for home consumption

The main emphasis of the Community Garden is a Master Gardener project to grow vegetables for senior centers, public health programs and similar agencies so that persons utilizing those services can have fresh produce during the growing season. The Community Garden has produced in excess of a ton of fresh produce each summer for distribution among food shelves, senior meal sites and others in the three county area of St. Croix, Polk and Pierce.

The garden has served as a demonstration site in the past. New Richmond High School Service Day students help plant the large garden each May to get it started for the summer's produce.

This year the Service Day will be Friday, May 18. During the growing season other youth groups have helped with garden maintenance and care, as well as harvesting vegetables for distribution to local agencies. The opportunity is there for a community service oriented project during the summer. A plus, Master Gardeners are often on site to provide the chance to "talk gardening."
