'Fancy Feast' benefits Home For Life sanctuary

Iraq War veteran and bestselling author Luis Carlos Montalván will be guest of honor at Home For Life's annual Fancy Feast fundraiser at the Calhoun Beach Club in Minneapolis on Sunday, Sept. 23.

Home For Life, located in Star Prairie, is an animal sanctuary that specializes in caring for otherwise unadoptable pets. Montalván's bestseller, "Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him," is the story of how Capt. Montalván was saved from "the war after the war" by Tuesday, his beloved service dog and the unique bond that grew from their partnership.

The book, which also raises awareness of the important role of assistance dogs for wounded veterans, is the subject of a major motion picture to be released next year.

"We are honored to have many different speakers headline our events," said Lisa LaVerdiere, director, Home For Life. "But Luis and Tuesday have so many connections to Home For Life's mission that this will be an especially memorable event. Part of what makes Home For Life so unique is that it trains some of its many resident dogs as therapy dogs to visit local hospital cancer units, hospice centers, psychiatric wards and especially the VA Hospital's Polytrauma Unit. Our therapy dogs visit veterans similar to Luis, and who benefit greatly from these therapy dog visits."

Home For Life's 2012 Fall Fancy Feast will include a brunch, live auction and book signing. For more information, and to reserve tickets, visit the Home For Life website at
