UW-Extension hosting dairy modernization tours June 21
On Tuesday, June 21, the St. Croix County UW-Extension offices will be hosting two dairy farm modernization tours.
These tour stops will provide other dairy farmers and consultants the opportunity to learn from visiting new facilities.
David Kammel, UW-Extension Biological Systems Engineer, will also be on hand to answer questions on planning for dairy modernization.
The first tour will be at 10 a.m. at the Gausman Family Farm located at 1050 Hwy. 63, Baldwin. The Gausman’s constructed a four-row free stall barn with Jan-Air curtains for natural ventilation. After researching various designs, Design Built Structures built the new barn in the fall of 2015.
The facility has 107 stalls, utilizes sand bedding for cow comfort, and has included two pens for special needs animals or heifers. The Gausmans planned this expansion to bring the next generation back to the farm, and approached this major project by growing first in steps. The Gausman farm is located approximately three miles north of Baldwin on the West side of Hwy. 63.
The second tour will take place at 12:30 p.m. at West-Croix Dairy, the VanDyk Family located at 1741190th St., New Richmond.
Following a barn fire the summer of 2015 that destroyed their previous barn, the VanDyk’s constructed a new tie stall barn in the fall of 2015. The barn features two different stall widths to accommodate their mixed herd of Holsteins and Jerseys, wide feed mangers with overhead doors for more efficient feeding in barn, box stalls for special needs animals, and tunnel ventilation.
The VanDyks have already noted an improvement in cow comfort in the new facility. Arrow Builders constructed the barn and the first group of cows was moved in January 2016. West-Croix is located approximately 1.5 miles east from County Road T (170th Avenue East to 190th Street North) or 2.5 miles west of Hwy. 63 (170th Avenue West to 190th Street North).
