Staying connected with people is a highlight of being at the library. This week I've had several conversations with families about how busy they are more busy than ever this summer. There is a constant pressure, real or perceived, that we can't say NO to opportunities and invites or to our kids. It seems we have become a society that keeps adding more to the calendar: the sports activities, the pool parties, the instrument lessons, the dance lessons; you know how long your list is. When was the last time you and your family had down time, you know, the thing that we all crave, but never seem to get?
My goal is to put it on the calendar since everything else gets on the calendar. I'm just as guilty of overscheduling myself as the next person. Burnout is a real thing, I see it on so many parents and kids as they rush in to return the reading logs, hurry quick and grab another stack of books and rush back out of the door to the next activity. I know how easy it is to overcommit and how hard it is to say that little two letter word, NO. Think about it. Practice it. Use it. Just say no and find some breathing space these last few weeks of summer. It goes fast and before we know it the school schedule will take over. You know those school supplies are out everywhere so it is coming!
