NRFD Chili Cook-Off slated for April 14
Chili lovers don't need to wait much longer to taste some of New Richmond's finest chili - the annual New Richmond Fire and Rescue Chili Cook-Off is slated for April 14 from 4-8 p.m.
The annual event started in 2010 as a way for the local fire department to raise money to help pay for training and equipment related to their duties. The event still acts as a fundraiser for the department, but the event has gotten bigger.
According to Scott Lynch, firefighter, the first chili cook-off had only nine contestants. In 2011 18 people registered their chili recipes.
Jim VanderWyst, fire chief, said the department has high hopes that 2012 will be even bigger.
Anyone can enter the contest. To register, call the fire department at 715-243-0429. A $15 entry fee is required to enter the competition.
Chilis will be divided into three heat categories - hot, medium and mild. Judges will award cash prizes and plaques to the winner in each category. A fourth prize and plaque will be given as the Judges' Choice Award for creativity or unusual ingredients.
The public is welcome to attend the chili cook-off and sample the chili. Chili will be served from 4-7 p.m. There is no charge for the public; however, free will donations will be accepted. Along with the chili, hot dogs, cheese, crackers, side dishes and desserts will also be served. Pop, beer and milk will be available for purchase.
Along with food and drinks, firefighters will be on hand to answer any fire-related questions, give tours of the fire hall or just visit with the public, VanderWyst said.
Just like previous years, the fundraiser will also include games, a silent auction and a series of raffles with prizes, including Milwaukee Brewers tickets and Green Bay Packers memorabilia.
All proceeds will help provide training and equipment for New Richmond Fire and Rescue.
