Donnelly finds a perfect match with Christ Lutheran Church

Scott Donnelly

Scott Donnelly had a good feeling when he sat down with Christ Lutheran Church as part of the interviewing process Church members conducted in their search for a new pastor.

“I felt like I had a real solid connection with them from the first time we talked,” he said. “Their needs matched my abilities.”

The church agreed as well as and Donnelly was named the new pastor. He started earlier this month.

“This congregation has been gracious,” he said. “It is very healthy and very welcoming. It has exceeded my expectations.”

Donnelly is a New Jersey native who grew up in a Roman Catholic family.

“I wanted to be a priest, but yet, I wanted a family as well,” he explained.

After prayer and consultation, Donnelly settled on Social Work. He earned his Bachelor’s and was working on his Masters’ when he met his wife Lindsey.

Lindsey, a lifelong Lutheran, convinced Scott Lutheran was the right faith for him.

“The word we kept coming back to was grace,” Scott said. “That’s the hallmark of Catholic and Lutheran churches. I was very happy my Catholic heritage fit into the the Lutheran understanding as well.”

The pair came back to the Midwest, specifically, the Twin Cities (where Lindsey is from), so Scott could graduate from Luther Seminary, which he did in 2013.

Donnelly previously served a congregation in New Hampshire, but citing a need to return to the midwest, he entered the call process and the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin thought Christ Lutheran Church would be a possibility.

Donnelly said in his short time at Christ Lutheran, he’s been impressed with how they share gifts with the community and how they connect with the youth and families.

“They have a strong vision on where it wants to go and I want to be a part of it,” he said. “I’ve been humbled by the generosity of both the congregation and the community at large.

“I wake up every day excited to serve the church and community.”

As for the family, Scott and Lindsey are the parents of two children, ages 6-and-a-half and 3. Right now, they reside in south Minneapolis.

“This congregation has made me feel like home,” he said.

Donnelly said his goals for the church in the future include getting out in the community more, opening their doors and fostering relationships.
