Pennington honored and privileged to serve at Bethany Lutheran

Dan Pennington has always liked being in the church setting, whether it’s been part of a church council, mission trips or whatever was needed.

“I like getting to know people,” he explained. “It’s always been a part of my life.”

For his next church function, Pennington went down a different road: Pastor. He started last week at Bethany Lutheran Church in Star Prairie.

“I hope this works for a long time,” Pennington said. “It’s a privilege and honor to be here.”

This will be his first call; something he admits has caused a little apprehension.

“I’m a little nervous in about serving the congregation in their faith journey,” he explained.

Pennington comes to Bethany Lutheran from Luther Seminary where among his internship stops was First Lutheran Church in New Richmond. His ordination service was also at First Lutheran, where 200 people attended.

His only reservation coming into the seminary was preaching, but once he did it for the first time, those feelings changed.

“Once I did it, I fell in love with it,” he said.

He later added, “[doing the internship] was worth it because I met new people, even if it was a flop, but it wasn’t.”

Pennington can turn to a familiar source if he has any questions: His wife, Kathy, who for the last five-plus years has been pastor of East Immanuel Lutheran Church in Amery. The two are the proud parents of Martin, a golden retriever. The two are also fans of the Green Bay Packers, thanks to an unusual connection. When they first moved to this area, they were indecisive about which NFL team to support. A scan of the rosters then showed Andrew Quarless on the Packers roster. He attended Penn State University, the same college Kathy attended, which is all it took.

He concluded in his short time with the Bethany congregation, he’s been impressed with how much of a community they are along with being hospitable to one another.

Bethany Lutheran has a traditional worship at 8 a.m. Sundays and a contemporary worship at 9:30 a.m. For more information, call 715-248-3730; or visit lutheransonline.com/bethanystarprairie.
