Choose an adventure
"Hezekiah put his whole trust in the God of Israel. There was no king quite like him, either before or after. He held fast to God -- never loosened his grip -- and obeyed to the letter everything God had commanded Moses. And God, for his part, held fast to him through all his adventures."
2 Kings 18:5, The Message Bible
Kick it old school with me for a minute: Choose your own adventure books.
Do you remember those? I'm quite certain they were the only books I completed until college the second time. For the unfamiliar, the design of a choose-your-own-adventure book is that the reader is brought to a certain point in the story and then is invited to select one of a number of options of how the story will then unfold. Here's an example: "And so it was that Troy and Mary came to a crossroads. Faced with three paths, they chose to ....
#1: Take the road on the right that leads to the cave where the three-headed dragon lurks. (Go to page 43)
#2: Take the road on the left where they will need to pass through the dreaded forest of gloom, home of the gnomes. (Go to page 52)
#3: Take the winding road in front of them which leads through the misty mountain ranges of whom only a few have survived to tell of the perils within. (Go to page 192)
The level of participation and engagement that this approach created was incredible! You are a part of the story. You are shaping the story as it unfolds.
God has designed the experience of following Jesus to be much like a choose your own spiritual adventure (within the boundaries of His will of course).
God, who got you started in this spiritual adventure, shares with us the life of his Son and our Master, Jesus. He will never give up on you. Never forget that. (1 Corinthians 1:7, The Message Bible)
God invites us into a spiritual adventure and then promises to be with us and empower us. True: You can't do it alone, but He'll provide His power. True: You're afraid to be alone, but He'll be with you.
If you've stepped out of the adventure or have been sidelined for a while, receive afresh the vision that He has not given up on you. He wants you to experience His life and power as you embrace Jesus and His mission. God is at work in some incredible and amazing ways in our day and He wants you in on the adventure. He really wants you to feel like you are a part of this.
But, you've got to do something, you've got to take that step, that risk and go for it. Trust Jesus, do something and watch what He does. As I like to tell our people at the Bridge Bible Church: Ready? Aim! FIRE!
