Shelter plans birthday event

For its 10th birthday celebration, Grace Place is holding a celebration, and inviting the community to the homeless shelter on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Duana Bremer, Grace Place director, said the event will start with a brief ceremony led by the regional Salvation Army leader.

"And then it's going to be fun, fun, fun," Bremer said.

We're going to have a big tent outside. We're going to be serving lunch," Bremer said. Lunch, she added, will be pulled pork, coleslaw, baked beans and chips. And of course, there will be activities for the children.

"We've got a swing set in the back yard," Bremer said. "We also have a 26-foot Salvation Army Kettle jump house that we're going to have up."

There will also be cotton candy, popcorn, etc. for the children to enjoy in the back yard.

"So it should be a really fun afternoon for the kids."

Bremer said the event will also include tours of Grace Place for those interested. She said she hopes to have sponsors for every room in Grace Place at that point, so all the rooms can look nice for Grace Place's birthday celebration.

Bremer said Grace Place's rooms have had sponsors since Grace Place was started in 2002, but 10 years later it was time to call for a few new sponsors. Bremer said sponsors agree to support the upkeep of a room, purchasing things like bed sheets and window blinds as they are needed.

Bremer said sponsors are helpful because while a few bed sheets and window blinds for one room are not very much of a hardship, the cost of the upkeep of all the rooms adds up and it's hard for Grace Place to keep up.

"If we have to go through and replace every one in the house, that's huge," Bremer said.

According to Lori Scheder, shelter manager, there are 11 sponsors already signed up, leaving three bedrooms and seven other rooms as yet unsponsored.

Bremer said all are invited to come celebrate Grace Place's birthday on Sept. 30 at Grace Place in Somerset.
