Nemecs selected as Pea Soup Days marshals

Brad (right) and Sandy Nemec will lead Somerset's 2013 Pea Soup Days Parade as grand marshals.

When Brad Nemec received an email asking him to be grand marshal for the Pea Soup Days parade, he said he was surprised.

"It's an honor, and it's very humbling," Nemec said.

Nemec said he and his wife, Sandy, will lead the Pea Soup Days Parade as grand marshals this year. They were chosen in recognition of their service to the Somerset community.

The Nemecs have been involved in various church councils as well as the Somerset School District for many years.

Brad Nemec said he has a "pay-it-forward" life philosophy.

"If I can do something, then (I) do it," Brad Nemec said. "Everything is cyclic. It all comes around."

Brad Nemec was the Somerset High School athletic director, prior to his retirement. He is currently serving as interim high school principal. Brad Nemec has also worked with youth recreation baseball and softball, and been a part of the Somerset Chamber of Commerce. He has also served as the village's municipal judge for around 22 years.

"If I wasn't doing that, I'd do something else," Nemec said. "I have been very fortunate to be a public employee and have the support of the community that I've had over the years."

Sandy Nemec has been very involved in the Somerset School District, from planning the post-prom party for 15 years to running concessions at athletic events. She was a special ed aide at the middle school until the end of 2011. She has also volunteered with area 4-H Clubs and Girl Scouts.

The Nemecs said volunteering is important to them, because Somerset is important to them.

"We live here," Sandy Nemec said. "It's as simple as that. If you can't be involved in your community, what else is there?"

Brad Nemec has been an announcer for the Pea Soup Days parade for several years, and said he will miss announcing this year. However, while the Nemecs said they don't like being the center of attention, they enjoy being a part of such an important community event as the Pea Soup Days Parade.

"It isn't something that you have to acknowledge publicly," Nemec said, "but it is an honor."

Brad Nemec said he would like to thank the people that have supported him and Sandy Nemec's selection as Pea Soup Days grand marshals.
