Church takes action with an auction

"Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors" is the slogan at New Richmond United Methodist Church.

Perhaps best known for their annual spring and fall rummage sales or Fun Fest Pie & Ice Cream Social, the congregation is trying something new, the first annual "Action Through Auction."

The Auction will be held on Sunday, Sept. 23, at the United Methodist Church, 209 E. Second St., New Richmond.

Pat Allegar, a "snowbird" member, brought back this fundraising idea from an experience last winter at her Florida church and presented the challenge in June.

"Let's try a live and silent auction to help raise more funds to support our many ministries," she said.

It was agreed that 10 percent will go to global and local mission connections. Examples of current ministries include Faith House, Habitat for Humanity, Love Baskets, Community Christmas Dinner and missions to Africa and China.

Rev. Cathy Hamblin said she is excited by the generous response from the congregation.

"At first many were stumped by what to donate," she said. "We have now come to better realize the unique talents that individuals have to offer. The initial challenge has now blossomed into an exciting adventure that we are sure will be a fun day for the entire community. All are welcome and invited."

Another committee member, Deb Geving, said, "I am encouraged by the response of our congregation to the 'personal services' donated category. I would be surprised if we don't come up with ideas for future ministries by the brainstorming of our membership."

Lunch will be served by the United Methodist Women's group. Preview of auction items will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the live and silent auctions starting at 1 p.m.
