Concert set to support school's 'Kids Club Fund'

Several Roberts area churches and the Roberts Lions Club are coming together to host a concert Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Croix Central Elementary School in support of the "Kids Club Fund."

The entertainment will be "Sonny Bryant and the Sonny Bryant Trio." Sonny Bryant, a Houston native, performs "do-wop-era" music, according to event coordinator Ron Campbell.

Bryant has performed across the United States from Las Vegas to the Paramount Theater to the Cotton Club. He performs popular songs from the past four decades, including music by The Platters, Sam Cooke and Frank Sinatra.

Campbell said he got the idea to ask Bryant to perform at St. Croix Central after seeing one of Bryant's concerts.

"Everybody had a great time when he was performing," Campbell said. "He sort of inspired me because he had done something similar to this in a school near to where he was."

Campbell said he went back to Roberts and spoke with Rev. Dean Simpson of Cross Lutheran Church, where he attends. Campbell said Cross Lutheran had been looking for a way to do some community outreach. He said the idea for the concert went over very well.

Cross Lutheran is working with four other churches in Hammond and Roberts, as well as the Roberts Lions Club, to bring the concert to Roberts.

Campbell said he hopes to raise enough money to pay for the concert before it happens so all of the proceeds from the concert will go to the Kids Club Fund.

The Kids Club Fund at St. Croix Central Elementary School supports needy students and their families. The fund helps pay field trip fees, provides nutritious snacks, helps purchase school pictures and yearbooks, supplies winter clothing and works with the Holiday Angels program.

Tickets for the concert are $15 each and can be purchased at the door on the night of the concert. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased before the concert at Cross Lutheran Church by calling 715-749-3551.
