The Fund to Benefit the St. Croix Health Center in New Richmond recently announced a patio expansion at the Kitty Rhoades Memorial Care Center, part of the St. Croix Health and Rehab Center, provided by local veterans and business organizations in St. Croix County.

The previous outdoor fenced patio at the unit was limited in size and scope.

"Residents would benefit from additional texture by including a green grass lawn instead of just the concrete pavers," said SCHC Administrator Sandy Hackenmueller.

Members of the Fund to Benefit the St. Croix Health Center worked with staff and reached out to local veterans organizations which included American Legion Post #111 in Somerset, VFW Post 10818 in New Richmond, and VFW Post 2115 in Hudson for grant monies to fund additional fencing, expanding the current patio by 8 feet to ensure that lawn space would be within the fenced area. The Berquist Insurance Agency in New Richmond donated towards the project as well.

"Our mission is to donate to local projects that benefit the lives of veterans, their spouses and community youth. This seemed like a good project to support as there are veterans residing at the SCHC campus and Orchard View Terrace," said Earl Fatheree, Commander of American Legion Post #111, who also spoke on behalf of St. Croix County American Legions.

"This natural feature makes residents feel more 'at home' when they can feel grass under their feet," Hackenmueller said.

The Kitty Rhoades Memorial Memory Care Center provides services to seniors with Alzheimer's disease and related conditions. The unit is a testament to the important work of Rhoades and her tireless advocacy for dementia care, especially while serving as Wisconsin's Secretary of Health Services. The center is designed to enhance the quality of life through meaningful activities while promoting independence, with staff striving to create a calm and inviting environment giving our residents a sense of peace.
