New car sales drop 37 percent across state in November

One analyst calls it brutal.

Sales of new vehicles in Wisconsin were down almost 37 percent in November, compared to the same month a year ago.

That's according to Reg Trak, a Waterloo company that keeps tabs on new vehicle registrations.

Scott Quimby said new car sales were down 39 percent over the last year, while trucks sales skidded 35 percent.

He said it hasn't been this bad since the days of double-digit inflation and interest rates almost three decades ago.

Quimby says dealers are in turmoil, and many are surviving day-to-day at the moment.

Not everybody is in the same boat. But the head of the state's Auto and Truck Dealers association recently said the current recession would put 15 percent of Wisconsin dealerships out of business.
