State's online retailers best place to find holiday job

If you're looking for a holiday job, a Wisconsin online retailer is probably a good place to go.

The Duluth Trading Co., of Belleville has hired 350 people to ship rugged work clothing, up from 300 last Christmas.

Marketing director Suzanne Harms says the company will need to fill 350,000 orders in the next two months, mostly between Thanksgiving and December 19.

And despite the rough economy, Duluth Trading says it's still doing well.

Nationally, experts say holiday hirings will be the fewest since 2001 as the result of tight consumer credit and rising business costs. But online shopping remains strong.

The consulting firm of Challenger, Gray, and Christmas says total Internet orders rose 19 percent last year to around $29 billion.

And consultant John Challenger says it's part of a long-term trend.

At Swiss Colony in Monroe - a mail-order food business - about 70 percent of its 5,000 temporary jobs have been filled. And about 80 percent have worked for the company before.

The Lands' End catalog clothing firm of Dodgeville says it's not increasing its holiday labor force. It's still recruiting about 2,000 workers, the same number as a year ago.
