Stevens Point police shooting being investigated
Two outside agencies continue to investigate the weekend shooting death of a suspect by a Stevens Point police officer.
According to Chief Jeff Morris, an officer tried to handcuff a stolen car suspect when he broke away and ran.
Another officer found the man a short time later.
Morris said the 14-year veteran officer used a chemical spray and a Taser stun gun to try and get the man under control. Those two got into a scuffle, and the officer shot the man twice in the chest.
The suspect later died at a Stevens Point. The officer was treated for minor injuries. No names have been released.
Portage County Coroner Scott Rifleman said the shooting victim did not have identification on him - and he was looking for relatives to identify him. The incident happened on Saturday.
Morris said the officer remains on paid administrative leave, while the Portage County sheriff's department and state justice investigators keep looking into the incident.
