Counsell and Weathers latest Brewers to file for free agency

Craig Counsell and David Weathers are the latest Milwaukee Brewers to file for free agency. They were among 31 big leaguers who filed Monday.

Weathers' move was a formality, since the Brewers said Friday they would not exercise his $3.7 million option to bring him back next year.

Counsell, 39, filed after completing a one-year contract.

Five other Brewers filed for free agency on Friday - Mike Cameron, Jason Kendall, Felipe Lopez, Frank Catalanotto and Corey Patterson.

General manager Doug Melvin has already said Cameron won't be back, but he's not talking about the status of the other free agents.

Cameron became expendable when the Brewers acquired center-fielder Carlos Gomez from Minnesota for J.J. Hardy.

Melvin said he would use Cameron's $10 million salary from this year to improve the team in other areas.
