Salvation army seeks support for Christmas in July

The St. Croix County branch of the Salvation Army is preparing for its "Christmas in July" Red Kettle Campaign.

The campaign begins at the end of June and lasts through the month of July.

According to Duana Bremer, director of the Salvation Army of St. Croix County, the money is needed to allow the Salvation Army to continue its programs locally.

Programs include providing gas vouchers to help people afford gas to get to work and other important appointments, rent and utilities assistance, Grace Place Homeless Shelter in Somerset and other programs.

Bremer said funds are so low this year, the St. Croix County Salvation Army has no plans at this point to hold a Shop with a Cop event. Through the event, held in previous years, low-income children are able to get school clothes. The children are aided in selecting their school-wear by local law enforcement officers.

Bremer said the St. Croix County Salvation Army has also had to stop giving out gas vouchers in order to continue to provide rent and utilities assistance.

Bremer said volunteers are needed to ring bells at various locations in St. Croix County, including Family Fresh Market and Super America in New Richmond, EconoFoods and Holiday Stationstore in Somerset, and County Market, Family Fresh Market and Walgreens in Hudson.

"If every church in St. Croix County took a day and every civic group took a day," Bremer said, "we would not need any more bell ringers."
