Missing Dunn County man found dead in Glen Lake

A body was pulled from a St. Croix County lake last week by authorities searching for a missing man.

St. Croix County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Scott Knudson said a male body was discovered at 2:24 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, near a dam in Glen Lake. Authorities for two days had concentrated their search for a missing 63-year-old Dunn County man on the lake at Glen Hills Park in eastern St. Croix County. The park is located near the Dunn County border just south of Glenwood City in the Town of Springfield.

The sheriff’s office on Friday identified the man as Downing, Wis., resident James A. Michels.

St. Croix County Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Klatt said a medical examiner ruled the cause of death as freshwater drowning.

The search began on Monday, when St. Croix County sheriff’s deputies were called to assist a welfare check on a possibly suicidal man from Dunn County, said St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Scott Knudson.

The man’s cellphone last placed him in the area of the park, Knudson said. Authorities found the man’s truck at the park.

Law enforcement conducted a search at the park until nightfall Monday and resumed the search on Tuesday, with the aid of a boat from Pierce County and more than a dozen deputies.

The search continued Wednesday, Knudson said. Water patrol boats from Minnesota’s Washington County were brought in, as well as a four-dog K-9 team from Polk County, “to make sure we cover the area as best we can,” Knudson said.
