Mistrial declared in Cherrier trial

Memorial event planned for Scott Spoo

A memorial event has been arranged to celebrate the memory of New Richmond native Scott Spoo.

Spoo, the valedictorian of the New Richmond Class of 2000, was killed in a pedestrian-vehicle accident as he jogged on Feb. 22. Spoo graduated with a degree in biology from UW-Green Bay. Then he earned a master’s degree in engineering at the University of Minnesota, while working as an engineer at 3M Corporation.

Spoo had found his place in the Twin Cities, becoming an enthusiast of all silent sports, especially running and biking. He traveled all over the globe to enjoy different experiences.

The memorial event, planned for Wednesday, May 17, will celebrate several of his loves. It will be held at Battle Creek Mountain Bike Trail in St. Paul from 4:30-7 p.m. The event is titled the “Try-It Trail Ride.”

The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. with snacks and Sweet Science Ice Cream. Spoo got involved with the Sweet Science company when it was in its infancy. He developed a punch card system for customers, helped at tastings, and was involved in the marketing of the company. His sister, Holly, said he donated a great deal of time to help get the organic ice cream out to new customers.

“Scott was a big ice cream fiend,” Holly said.

The treats will be followed by a program and dedication of a bike repair station at the trail. The station will be dedicated in Scott’s honor. Scott was a member of the 3M bicyclist group and their members have done much of the work in making this event happen.

The event will conclude with the opportunity to bike the trails at the park, one of Scott’s favorite locations to bike. Holly said that Scott moved to his apartment in St. Paul because of the access it had to the trails. She said Scott kept eight bikes at his apartment.

Several bicycle shops have gotten involved in the event. They will have helmets and bikes available for people who want to try biking. One of the shops has donated a fat tire bike that will be raffled off at the event.
