Wanda Viellieux and Verla Thorne have been busy knitting and crocheting purple baby caps. Between them they have made 95 hats over the past few months.

During the months of April through September, The Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board and Celebrate Children Foundation will be collecting handmade knitted/crocheted purple baby caps statewide. All those donated caps will be distributed to local area clinics, hospitals, home visitation programs and county agencies to in turn be given to Wisconsin families with infants during the months of November and December. The caps will be accompanied by educational materials provided by the Period of PURPLE Crying program (purplecrying.info). The purple caps serve as a visual reminder to the parents of infants to never shake a baby.

The Period of Purple Crying program is facilitated by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome. The program has two goals:

• To support parents and caregivers in their understanding of early increased infant crying and

• To reduce the incidence of shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma.

The Wisconsin Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Board has partnered with the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome to organize the third annual Wisconsin Click for Babies Campaign. This campaign raises awareness about normal infant crying while educating the public about the adverse effects of shaking a baby.
