FedEx authorized center opens in NR

The owner of a new shipping center in New Richmond hopes the region's growth will translate into business success.

Glenn Thompson, owner of the new Oh Ship store in the industrial park, has been in the data storage and office supply business for more than 12 years.

The former Stillwater resident moved to the area recently when his wife found a dream home along the Apple River, and Thompson started to explore business opportunities in the area.

Thompson contacted Federal Express about opening an authorized shipping center here and discovered the closest similar businesses is in Hudson.

"New Richmond is decent sized and it's going to grow," Thompson said. "And if the bridge ever gets built at Stillwater, it's really going to grow."

Thompson opened his business March 20 in the retail center along Wisconsin Drive, next to the Rapid Cable office. The phone number is 246-0070.

"We ship ground and overnight packages," Thompson explained.

FedEx will ship items up to 150 pounds, Thompson said, and in all shapes. Customers are asked to bring in the items or boxes to be shipped and they will be processed for pick-up by FedEx.

Apart from the shipping services, Oh Ship also has a variety of packing supplies on hand for sale, including various sized boxes, packing peanuts and tape.

The business also carries a few office supplies, including ink cartridges and toner for all kinds of copiers and printers.

"You can't stock every number, but I have the most popular ones on hand," Thompson said. "And the others I can usually order and get in the next day."

The center also stocks writeable computer CDs, Post-it notes and other supplies.

Oh Ship is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

Thompson said he's hopeful that the business will eventually catch on in New Richmond, even though it was quiet at his shop during the first week.

"I don't know if I can make a living doing it," he admitted. "But it just takes some time before people know about you."
