Spartans knock off Robbinsdale Cooper

A number of Somerset fans heard Robbinsdale Cooper players claiming they shouldn't have to play at a small school like Somerset before the two teams met last Tuesday.

Imagine the comments from those players when they had to ride back to Minnesota after suffering a 7-4 loss to the Spartans.

"They didn't want to be here, they didn't think we were in their league," said Somerset coach Grant Belisle.

It didn't take long for the Robbinsdale players to find out how wrong they were. Somerset's Bryce Montpetit scored 70 seconds into the game, and the battle was on.

This was a back-and-forth battle the whole way. Robbinsdale scored two goals, 45 seconds apart, early in the opening period to take a 2-1 lead. But Somerset again answered, with Corey Hehling tying the score at 2-2, just 5:23 into the game.

Both teams then got the defensive side of their game going. There wasn't another goal scored until midway through the second period, when Somerset's Tadd Landry scored.

This started another flurry of goals, with Robbinsdale tying the game three minutes later. Landry then struck again, with his second goal giving the Spartans a 4-3 lead heading into the third period.

The score stayed at 4-3 until Cooper got the tying goal with more than 10 minutes elapsed in the third period.

Somerset got the game-winner when junior Jake Rorabeck got a feed from Montpetit, springing him loose on a breakaway. Rorabeck was able to skate in and cleanly beat the Cooper goalie for the winner.

Somerset then added two empty-net goals to finish off the win.

Spartan goalie Ryan Schleusner made 33 saves in the win.

Coach Grant Belisle said the Spartans are still trying to figure out how good they are, after winning this game but being dealt a difficult loss by New Richmond on Thursday.

The Spartans only game this week is their Middle Border Conference finale. The Spartans will play at home in that game on Thursday, with Amery as the visiting team.
