Rough and tumble, Spartans fall at St. Bernard's

A free throw contest broke out in the Somerset-St. Bernard's girls basketball game last Friday.

Or so it seemed as both teams shot more than 30 free throws in the game. St. Bernard's hit seven more free throws than the Spartans and that proved to be the difference, with St. Bernard's winning 47-41.

"It was a rough and tumble game," said Somerset coach Bill Powers. "It was full-court both ways the whole game."

The Spartans were hoping to make this their second win of the season. For much of the game, they were in position to make that hope come true.

The spartans led 8-5 after a quarter and trailed 25-24 at halftime.

Kendra Steinlicht gave the Spartans a badly-needed offensive spark in the first half. She scored six points in the first quarter, then added four more in the second quarter. She finished the game with a team-high 14 points.

"Kendra is getting a lot more aggressive going to the basket," Powers said. "So is Mariah (Belisle). The others are catching on, they see they've got to do these things if they want to keep playing."

Belisle finished with 11 points, including hitting 5-6 free throws.

Somerset held a 32-27 lead in the third quarter, before St. Bernard's scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 33-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

St. Bernard's guard Laura Tischer then hit two three-pointers in the fourth quarter and the Spartans were never able to catch up.

The Spartans are back in action this Friday, in a home game against Osceola.
