Spartans' strong finish snuffs out B-W

A 12-0 run in the final three minutes of the game pulled out this one for the Somerset boys basketball team.

Baldwin-Woodville held a 39-38 lead, then stalled two minutes off the clock to hold the lead with three minutes left in the game. Somerset then took the lead with a Mike Wishard shot with 3:05 left in the game. That started the Spartans' run, leading to a 52-40 Somerset win.

Somerset remains in second place in the Middle Border Conference following this win, two games behind Amery, who is undefeated in MBC play.

Somerset had a rough start to Thursday's game, trailing 10-5 after a quarter after the Spartans had started the game with a 5-0 lead. For the rest of the game there was rarely a time where either team had a lead of more than two points.

After Wishard's hoop gave the Spartans a 40-39 lead, the Spartans polished off the win with some deadly free throw shooting. The Spartans went 8-8 from the line in the final minutes, giving them an 18-19 final total for free throws during the game.

Somerset coach Eric Olson said the Spartans haven't played well in either game against B-W, but he said the intense defense the Blackhawks play is a big reason for that. He said he was pleased that the Spartans only had 11 turnovers in this game.

Somerset was led in Thursday's game by Mike Schachtner, who scored 22 points. Adam Henzler scored eight points, all from the free throw line. Schachtner led the team with eight rebounds and contributed four assists and three steals. Henzler led the team with six assists.

The Spartans return to MBC action this Friday, with a game at Durand. The Spartans will be playing at home next Tuesday, with New Richmond as the visiting team.
