Muckenhirn's bombs simply overwhelm Tigers

New Richmond was the only team to put a loss on Osceola's otherwise perfect Middle Border Conference girls basketball season.

So when the Chieftains came to New Richmond last Friday in the final round of the MBC season, Osceola's Ashlea Muckenhirn made sure the Tigers didn't strike down the Chieftains a second time.

Muckenhirn was incredible, the best player on the court in every facet of the game. Her 35 points led the Chieftains to a 67-44 win over New Richmond.

The Tiger girls kept the game close well into the fourth quarter. When Tiger guard Kelli Emerson hit a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter, the Tigers only trailed 40-38.

From there, Muckenhirn took over. She hit three straight three-pointers to start a 15-1 run for the Chieftains that decided the game.

For stretches of the game, Emerson and Muckenhirn almost seemed to have a personal duel going on. One would come down and hit a three-pointer, and the other would match it the next trip down the court. Emerson led the Tigers with 18 points, all from six three-pointers.

Still it was Muckenhirn who sealed the deal, scoring 16 of Osceola's 27 points in the fourth quarter. She was also the game's leading rebounder with nine and her eight steals were also tops in the game.

"She controlled things from the beginning," said New Richmond coach Eric Russell. "If we'd start making a push, she'd just take the ball and score."

If the Tigers are looking at missed chances in this game, they should be looking to the earlier stages of the game. Osceola got out to a 10-1 lead, because the Tigers couldn't hit a shot in the first six minutes of the game. Senior forward Shannon Timm finally got the Tigers rolling, scoring the team's first five points, and by the end of the first quarter the Tigers were back in the game at 12-7.

That started a pattern where the Tigers would make runs at the Chieftains, only to see the Chieftains respond and rebuild their lead.

"If we'd have shot better early on, it might have been a whole different game," Russell said. "We've got to shoot better against a team like that to beat them."

Laura Measner led the Tigers with seven rebounds. Jessica Mitchell had four assists to lead the Tigers.

Chopping down Elmwood

Last Tuesday the Tigers played a non-conference game against Elmwood, one of the teams low in the standings in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. The game was arranged because both teams had a hole in their schedules.

The game turned out to be a mismatch. Although Elmwood got the Tigers' attention by taking an 8-2 lead, New Richmond's girls quickly and decisively took charge. By halftime the Tigers led 32-13 and they finished by routing Elmwood 73-28.

Emerson led the Tigers with 28 points, including hitting seven three-pointers. That gave her 13 treys in the two Tiger games last week.

The starting front line of Timm, Measner and Nicole Borgen combined for 30 points in the game. Measner also led the Tigers with eight rebounds and Borgen's four assists led the team. Jessica Mitchell had six steals and Emerson stole the ball five times and the Tigers totalled 20 steals in the game.

Playoff trail

The Tigers began Division 2 tournament play on Tuesday against Barron. The winner of Tuesday's game will play again on Thursday, against the winner of the game between Hayward and Ashland. The winner of Thursday's game will advance to the regional final, which will be played at Clear Lake this Saturday.
