Sarnstrom's breakout game carries Central boys past GC

An 18-point outburst from center Cameron Sarnstrom led the St. Croix Central boys to a 46-28 win at Glenwood City last Thursday.

The win raises Central's season record to 11-6 and it gives the Panthers a rare season sweep of Glenwood City.

Boys basketball seeding meetings will be held this weekend. Central coach Mike Fern said the win at Glenwood City was a good indication that the Panthers are playing as a unified team as they position for a higher seed in the regional.

"It was a nice team win, you want everybody on the same page this time of the season," Fern said.

Fern said Sarnstrom's strong game was a reflection of the sharp team play. Sarnstrom was hitting his shots, and the Panther guards were able to penetrate the Hilltopper defense, where they could shoot or get the ball to Sarnstrom and the other post players.

Glenwood City led through the first quarter of the game. But when the Panthers took the lead in the second quarter, the game changed.

"Getting ahead of them is a key," Fern said. "Then they have to play at our tempo."

With Central's quickness, they soon took control of the game. The Panthers led 24-19 at halftime and in the second half the lead was in the 18-20 point range much of the half.

Central's defense has made a big stand in the first half of several games. This time the stand was made in the second half, holding the Hilltoppers to nine points in the second half.

The Panthers held a large rebounding edge in this game. Tyler Cody had one of his strongest rebounding nights, hauling down 10 boards to lead a balanced team effort. Cody also led the team with three steals and Steve Gulich accumulated eight assists to lead the team.

The Panthers play their final game before the seeding meeting this Friday, in a road game at Colfax. The Panthers will conclude their regular season the following Friday, Feb. 27, with a game at Spring Valley.
