Tigers third at Hudson Invite

Getting up against tougher competition, the New Richmond boys golf team showed they can compete with some of the best teams in the area.

Facing some of the best teams from western Wisconsin, plus a pack of Minnesota schools, the Tigers tied for third place in the Hudson Invitational on Monday.

New Richmond junior Scott Meyer was medalist in the tournament, shooting a 77. Trent Bauer was close behind, shooting an 80. They were followed by Josh Calleja with an 84, Blake Gillen with a 91 and Jeremy Leverty with a 95.

Tiger coach Jim Saliny was quite pleased with the play of the team, not only in the tournament but throughout the start of the season.

If this tournament is an indication, the Tigers will have to go outside the Middle Border Conference to see their best competition this season. The nearest MBC team to the Tigers on Monday was Ellsworth, which was 50 strokes behind the Tigers.

Last Tuesday the Tigers got more good non-conference competition, playing at Chippewa Falls. The Tigers were third in the quad meet, behind CF and La Crosse Central. Bauer led the Tigers with a 38 that day, followed by Leverty with a 39.

This will be a busy week for the Tigers. On Wednesday they play in the Somerset Invitational, then Thursday the Tigers will host a six-team MBC match. The Tigers will be splitting up their squads next Monday, with half the team playing a conference match at Amery and the other half playing in the Tartan Invitational.
