Panthers get half a meet in at Ellsworth

A half a meet is better than no meet.

As difficult as it's been to get any track meets in this spring, coaches have to be philosophical on the point. Last Tuesday the St. Croix Central track teams were competing at Ellsworth when the meet was called off midway through the event due to lightning.

The meet had been going well for both Central teams when the meet was called off. The Panther girls were winning the meet, while the boys were third among the five teams competing.

The Panther girls had won six of the 11 events that were completed in the meet. Tracy Gillis was the winner in two events, the 100 hurdles and the triple jummp. The Panthers took the top three places in the triple jump, with Anna Williams and Whitney Strickland taking second and third.

That wasn't the strongest finish for the girls. In the 400 meter dash the Panthers had four placewinners. Megan Heinbuch, Anne Redmon and Darcey Tharp took the top three places and Casey Kooiman finished fifth.

Redmon was the winner in the 100 meters, edging out Heinbuch for the win. Laura Skala took the win in the 1600 and Central's 3200 meter relay team won with a 32-second advantage.

Central's boys scored wins in two events. Jordan Kooiman was the winner in the 400 meters and the boys 800 meter relay team won by five seconds.

The Panthers are hoping the weather holds out for them this Friday. The two home meets that have been postponed so far will be combined into a makeup meet this Friday, which will be held as the St. Croix Central Invitational.
