Tiger girls second at Ellsworth Inv.

Record setting efforts from Hannah Demulling and Ayla Mitchell led a top quality effort from both New Richmond track teams in the 2003 Ellsworth Invitational last Friday.

Demulling sprinted her way into the record book twice, winning the 100 and 200 dashes in record times. Mitchell won the 800 meters in an Ellsworth meet record.

New Richmond's girls took second in the eight-team meet and the Tiger boys took fourth, both facing some heavy duty competition.

Having three meet records was only half of the reason why Tiger girls coach Brent Aukema was beaming over the meet's results. The top athletes on the Tigers performed well, but they weren't the only ones. There was a huge team-wide advancement made by the Tiger girls.

"We're getting a lot of doubles (two girls placing in one event)," Aukema said. "It's starting to show we have more depth than we thought. It's across the board, from the seniors to the freshmen, who are contributing."

While girls like Demulling and Mitchell set records, teammates like Natalie Johnson, Liz Scheder, Emily Frank and Krista Mitchell were young team members who stepped up their contributions in this meet.

The Tigers battled Cannon Falls for second place all through the meet. In the final standings the Tigers were able to pull out second place by 4.5 points over Cannon Falls.

Tiger boys coach Roger Reuvers was just as thrilled with the performance of his squad.

"We saw huge things happen, confidence for some kids really grew," Reuvers said. "They found they can compete right with Amery and Osceola."

Leading the Tiger efforts was senior Mike Powers. Powers was second in the 200 and third in the 100 and he anchored the 400 meter relay team that ran second with an impressive 44.7 time. That's a better time than the 400 relay team ran all of last season. The school record is 44.5 seconds.

Bryan Tschudy was among the younger Tigers who stepped up his performance. He placed sixth in the 100 and ran strong legs in two relays.

Personal bests were logged in field events by Pete Larson in the discus throw and Adam Lanners in the triple jump. Larson's throw of 134-2 beat his previous best by nine feet and got him second place. Lanners placed seventh in the triple jump.

A pleasant surprise for the Tigers was Jeremy Hseuh. He took seventh in the 300 hurdles, then stepped in when the Tigers needed an extra runner in the 800 relay.

The Tiger schedule will continue to pick up in strength. This Friday the Tigers will compete in the Somerset Invitational. A week later, the Tigers will be hosts for the annual New Richmond Relays.
